Job Description Job Description POSITION SUMMARY : The RN
Educator is a registered nurse functioning in the Nursing
Department to ensure the educational needs and requirements of the
nursing staff are met and that the staff meets the required level
of competency through an organized plan of continuous assessment
and educational opportunities. This organized plan of continuous
assessment and educational opportunities will help direct the
clinical staff toward excellence in patient care, health care
services, and management of the overall organization. This
individual will function as the “second” to the unit director. Is
expected to work 50% of time on the unit as a primary or charge RN.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS : Develop, implement and evaluate educational
programs for nursing personnel in the perinatal department. This
will include orientation of new personnel, on the job training and
hands on teaching within the clinical setting, in-service education
and continuing education. Determine education needs by conducting
needs assessment and coordinating with nursing management. Assist
nursing management in providing additional appraisal information
regarding employee performance, competence, & progress. Participate
in the development and updating of policies. Participate in the
implementation and assessment of the effectiveness of policies,
procedures, and standards. Participate in any committee that may be
assigned. Act as a consultant and resource person for all members
of the nursing staff. Participates in counseling or other
activities that may contribute to educational growth, career, or
staff development. Support and facilitate implementation of
policies and procedures. Provides guidance and advice to
nursing/clinical staff in interpreting and understanding policy
change. Serve as the “second” to the Director of the unit/units by
assisting with scheduling, appraisals, competency, unit staff
meetings, conflict resolution, change management, coaching, process
improvement, meeting attendance, and to cover Director absences and
vacation. Demonstrates expertise in delivering quality patient care
in the unit Works closely with the Department Directors to assess
the need for Quality Improvement Indicators and studies. Involves
the staff in the development of these studies. Implement them and
promote compliance. Responsible for compiling the QR/PI data and
participating in the quarterly nursing. QI meetings to assist with
problem-solving throughout the hospital and the unit. 11. Utilizes
the nursing process when making clinical decisions. 12. Will be
expected to work on the unit floors up to 50% of the time in the
role of a primary RN or Charge RN. OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES: Other
duties as assigned from time to time. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
: None. EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS : Graduation from an
accredited school of nursing. BSN or Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
Demonstrated clinical competence in specialty unit. Three years
clinical experience in acute care required Knowledge of the Nurse
Practice Act Knowledge of patient's rights Knowledge of JCAHO
standards and Title 22 regulations Knowledge of teaching
techniques, adult education, and evaluation methods. Demonstrated
ability to present self in a positive and professional manner.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS: Current licensure to practice
registered nursing in the state of California. Current AHA BLS
required upon hire. ACLS, NRP and PALS certification as required by
Department. Professional certification preferred. AGE OF THE
POPULATION SERVED : Age groups based on specific department
populations served; e.g., ER, M/S, or Perinatal. PHYSICAL
REQUIREMENTS : see attached Manual dexterity with fine motor
ability to operate and handle equipment used in the department.
Modification: No lifting more than 25 lbs. MENTAL REQUIREMENTS :
Ability to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines. Ability to
communicate with various personality types. Ability to make public
presentations. Ability to make decisions with patient and staff
safety in mind and based on sound fiscal practices. SCHEDULING AND
AVAILABILITY : Normal work schedule may consist of 3 twelve-hour
shifts on the nursing unit or 5 eight-hour shifts per pay period.
Scheduling is determined by patient care needs and includes
weekends, holidays, nights, on-call, etc. Working every other
weekend is a minimum requirement In staff emergencies, will be able
to work on alternate shifts and/or rotating job schedules or
similar activities, at intervals for limited periods of time as
mandated by department needs. When necessary, will have meetings or
classes outside of regular business hours to meet the needs of the
District Administration or the staff of the hospital, as directed
by Administration.
